Julian Hatton is an adventurer, explorer, inventor. In his current exhibition of 60x60-inch large-scale, and smaller, more open 10x10-inch (and some slightly larger) paintings at Elizabeth Harris Gallery, he gives us much needed respite from our incessant onslaught of global crises by bringing us through magical journeys of vibrant color, fictional landscapes, and playful experimentation. Anything might happen in these worlds – our childhood dreams reenacted, the memory of a most wonderful vacation brought back, a gift of our most cherished wish come true. Though tough paintings where the form and color have been worked and reworked so they work just right, they also are paintings of freedom, paintings where space has been collaged, collapsed, and expanded into impossible juxtapositions, where Julian’s brush flows to uncensored discoveries of texture, shape, color, and form. Julian Hatton also is an avid hiker, and remembered images and feelings from his recent trips through the dramatic Sierra mountains, California’s Central Valley, and the Pacific coast blend with his improvisatory spirit to create exuberant paintings that simultaneously suggest fantasy and the essence of real place.
