The title Entropvisions is in homage to my mother, the poet and art critic, Harriet Zinnes. In 1990 New Directions published a collection of her poems titled Entropisms, a word she made-up combining entropy - the tendency toward disorder - and tropism - the growth towards or away from a stimulus. Similarly, my short reviews combine entropy and tropism by suggesting growth towards a vision of art from the chaos of the art world. Through the back door, my title also pays homage to my physicist father, Irving Zinnes, whose long discussions with my mom got her thinking about entropy and tropism in the first place.

Among Friends 3 at Equity Gallery
2022.5.17
Organized by Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Beth Dary and Patricia Fabricant, the exhibition, Among Friends 3, at Equity Gallery (245 Broome Street), up though May 22, contains work by 300 artists. As such, it's almost a microcosm of a certain slice of NYC's art world. Each artist was given a 9x7-inch paper on which to do whatever they wanted, as well as an actual number. Artwork was then sewn together in numerical order, creating long strips that line the gallery's walls. The numbering system allowed for a random distribution of art and styles, but surprisingly a carefully curated layout probably couldn't have done a much better job. In addition to finding art by my friends and discovering art I admire by people I didn't know, I was amazed to find how many linkages existed between adjacent work - linkages of color, shape, intention. I remember being amazed by these randomly-made connections in past Among Friends shows this team has assembled. In my photos I've tried to give a sense of the breadth of this exhibition, but by no means have done the show the justice it deserves. If you can make it to the gallery, you won't be disappointed
