The title Entropvisions is in homage to my mother, the poet and art critic, Harriet Zinnes. In 1990 New Directions published a collection of her poems titled Entropisms, a word she made-up combining entropy - the tendency toward disorder - and tropism - the growth towards or away from a stimulus. Similarly, my short reviews combine entropy and tropism by suggesting growth towards a vision of art from the chaos of the art world. Through the back door, my title also pays homage to my physicist father, Irving Zinnes, whose long discussions with my mom got her thinking about entropy and tropism in the first place.
Mary Flinn & Peter Acheson Studio Visit
2022.8.30
Thank you Mary Flinn and Peter Acheson for so generously opening your studios to me recently. How lucky I am to have been given sneak previews to your shows opening in the next few weeks -- Mary's at Zuchner on Sept. 5 (through Sept. 11) and Peter's at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects on Sept. 10. I will leave specific comments on the work for when I see the shows and know what exactly is in them, but suffice it to say, the art is visually very exciting. At the studio, we had intense and probing conversations discussing so many aspects of the work: how just about of it in some way or another is landscape, how it visually expressed life's energies and forces, how the choice of materials is brought into the creative process, passion, being in the moment, symbolism, content vs. subject... you name it. The art is so rich in layers of meaning and visual expression it was hard to stop talking and looking. These will be powerful shows that I know I will highly recommend visiting.
